about us

Carrie Anne Funnell was born in Cambridgeshire in 1978. Born to be an artist, her creative flair was encouraged throughout her childhood.

In 2000 Carrie graduated from Leicester De Montfort University with a BA honours degree in the field of three-dimensional design. Upon graduating she became a lecturer in 3-D Design at Isle College, Cambridgeshire.

In 2001 Carrie Anne and her partner Sean Mickleburgh began their path to a successful business. Carrie focused on the artwork and making while Sean become an integral part of their profession as director, function designer, technician, accountant and entrepreneur - the driving force of their creative business.

In the first eight years they concentrated on product range, development, working with their clients' specific requirements and creating a style for which their work has become renowned. During that period the business won competitions, received awards and marks of excellence, a business grant, magazine articles and media coverage and they gained recognition with an international following. Reputable within their field of glass they are able to exhibit amongst their peers at some of the highest profile events in the UK.

In 2009 Carrie and Sean took a year out of the business. In an epic journey they explored 25 countries all over the world. Carrie evolved as an artist; it gave her a lifetime of inspiration to be creative from. Her style became more expressive and freer. It expanded their business opportunities for the future and on their return to the UK in 2010 they introduced an exciting new style and new product ranges.

In 2011, The Glass Gallery was opened for public viewing, with other selected glass artists also being represented through the gallery. Currently together Carrie Anne and Sean continue to exhibit at selected events within the UK and hope in the future to exhibit their work internationally.

our glass

As an artist and designer, Carrie Anne Funnell approaches her work by combining contemporary design with the continuing exploration of her chosen medium - GLASS.

Carrie has observed a wide variety of landscapes, seascapes and natural forms from around the world. With a sensitive approach to the infinite colour palette that is created in the making process, Carrie transforms her inspiring memories into movement, fluidity and organic shapes, creating designs that are distinctly hers in a style that gradually evolves with her as an artist.

Why glass? Simply, it's her passion!

She is inspired firstly by the material of glass and its transparent, reflective and refractive qualities and then by its technical complexity and the challenges that can arise in the making. Although trained in many areas of glass making, Carrie chooses to specialise in and push the boundaries of the fused glass technique.

At present this process involves Carrie building the glass up in layers, starting off with blank sheets of clear glass and using that as her ‘canvas ’ to build upon. Colours are derived from oxides and ground glass and precious and non-precious metals which are then used between layers. Once the artwork is completed each piece is transformed within a four-day firing process.

Each piece is made with care, holds its own qualities and has its own individuality. It is important that with Carrie's glass art she makes an impact from a distance, naturally drawing the onlooker closer, revealing her attention to detail within the artwork creating a piece of art that remains exciting over a period of many years.
